Even though the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a wonderful companion and house pet, they are first and foremost a sporting dog. The instinct to hunt has been bred into the breed for generations. For me, one of the thrilling things to observe is a young Welsh working a field, excitement growing as the scent is found and the bird is flushed. You can see the little light bulb go off in their head: "This is what I do!" The joy with their expression, the enthusiasm in their effort and the sparkle in their eyes! At this point I am having as much fun as they are. Welsh can be successful hunting dogs while maintaining their place in the home as part of the family. I do not hunt myself, but make efforts to attend hunting tests with my dogs. It is wonderful to see the instinct come through and so important in a breeding program of a sporting dog. I have several Welsh in hunting homes and I never tire of hearing owners brag how these little known spaniels out flushed and out retrieved their hunting companions' dogs!
